Gestalt Therapy and Contemporary Psychoanalysis: Dialogical Bridges

An international seminar with Donna Orange and Margherita Spagnuolo Lobb

Milan (Italy), November 15-16, 2024

It is with great sadness that we inform you that Prof. Donna Orange will not be able to attend the seminar as she had an accident and she is now in the hospital. We wish her a speedy recovery.

In this link you will find the new program.

The seminar will explore ethical and epistemological issues in psychotherapy and develop them in theory and clinical practice. Participants will experience similarities and differences between contemporary psychoanalysis and contemporary Gestalt psychotherapy.

Donna Orange, a philosopher, psychologist, psychoanalyst, and  professor at Rutgers University, has pioneered the ethical turn in psychoanalysis. Based on the thinking of philosophers such as Levinas, she has radically changed the narcissistic attitude about care, which is centered on the responsibility of the healer. She has brought to the foreground the capacity of the other to unsettle us, and the ethical importance of caregivers to put this focus first. The radical ethics proposed by Donna do not provide rules but confront us with our responsibility as human beings. The many profoundly revolutionary themes she develops, such as the fallibilism  of the therapist, being the other’s keeper, the suffering stranger, and the principle of hospitality, challenge all psychotherapists and open paths toward an ecological responsibility that includes the I/world relationship.

Gestalt psychotherapy, with its perspective of the ecopsychological ethics of the relationship between organism and environment, the aesthetic concept of allowing oneself to be transformed by the other, and with the field perspective, which considers every therapeutic experience as emerging at the contact boundary between therapist and patient, will offer a stimulating countermelody that includes bodily feeling, concentration, and awareness as physiological conditions to for being curious about the other and being eager to reach out to him or her.
